Maybe it’s the low lighting. Maybe it’s the very good chairs. Either way, some of the best interiors right now have borrowed a little from the members’ club playbook. Not in a velvet-rope, members-only kind of way. More the feeling that you could settle in, order another drink and accidentally stay for four hours.
The formula starts with atmosphere. Deep, warm colours, tactile fabrics and lighting that comes from anywhere except the ceiling. Think velvet accent chairs, dark woods, marble side tables and lamps dotted around at different heights. Nothing is too bright, too pristine or too coordinated. The room feels layered, as though it has evolved rather than arrived in one delivery.
Then there’s the furniture itself. Members’ clubs understand that people rarely sit in neat rows. Chairs are angled towards each other, side tables appear exactly where you need one and different shapes and materials happily share the same room. At home, try pulling an accent chair away from the wall, adding a small side table within reach and creating a space designed for conversation rather than one that points exclusively at the TV.
For that layered, stay-for-one-more-drink feeling, we’d start with the Colby Khaki Chair and pull up a Sur Brown Emperador Side Table. Add low lighting, something good in your glass and absolutely no reason to leave.
The final ingredient is personality. Books, art, candles, objects from travels, something vintage next to something new. The aim isn’t to recreate a hotel lobby or private club at home. It’s to steal what they do best: make a room feel interesting enough that nobody is in a hurry to leave.
